…”According to the network of companies involved until the end of 2018 in the “Synchro-NET” EU-funded project – i.e. DHL Supply Chain Spain (project coordinator), Bureau Veritas, Circle, Cork Institute of Technology, Cosco Shipping Line, CRAIN, Cross-border Research Association, EMC2, FraunHofer, HydrOcean, Kongsberg Maritime AS, Kuehne+Nagel, LE Europe, MJC², Politecnico di Torino, Rail Safety and Standards Board Limited (RSSB), SAM Electronics, Software AG and SYCO – it has been theoretically demonstrated that with a significant market uptake Eco-NET will permit up to 30% of potential reduction in CO2 emissions for shipping and land-based transport, a 25-30% increase in modal shift to greener modes, a 20-30% decrease of costs connected to the rescheduling of transport routes/modes in case of any unexpected event occurring along the supply chain, a 12-20% reduction in hinterland transport costs and a 12-15% reduction of kms for trucks with fewer wasted epositioning movements.
Furthermore, thanks to the synchro-modal logistic optimization, it is estimated that a reduction between 30 and 50% in managing and administration costs of intermodal flows will be possible.”…

…“Integrated synchromodal planning of the port and terminal operations is a very effective and low cost solution,” says Dr Julian Stephens. “In many cases, currently each part of the operation (ship, berth allocation, terminal handling, truck, train) is planned using independent systems which optimise “locally”. This leads to mismatches along the supply chain, queuing being one of the negative consequences. Initiatives like SYNCHRO-NET are addressing this.”
SYNCHRO-NET combines advanced synchromodal logistics optimisation tools with smart steaming supply chain planning systems. Benefits include reduced congestion (a result of a more intelligent use of multimodal options) and optimised berth allocation (resulting in faster turnaround for ships).”…

…”Synchro-modality is the future of transportation i.e. seamless movement from one mode of transport to the other, dynamically updating and re-optimising the choice of modes and route taken in response to real-time events.
Synchro-modality is an ambitious concept: live big data streams processed by real-time optimisation algorithms, exploiting current and anticipated advances in machine intelligence. However it is already happening: the freight industry is sometimes seen as nervous of innovation but a major initiative known as SYNCHRO-NET is leading the way in logistics.”…
The articles about SYNCHRO – NET highlight the big potential of the project moving from an idea of intermodal transport to an idea of synchro-modal transport and creating an operative tool for integrated optimization and eco-net simulation. Real-time synchro-modal logistics optimization (e-Freight-enabled), slow steaming ship simulation & control systems, synchro-modal risk/benefit analysis statistical modelling, dynamic stakeholder impact assessment solution, synchro-operability communications and governance architecture are integrated to crate benefits for all the stakeholders in the supply chain.
